A head cold, also called a common cold, is a viral infection of your upper respiratory tract. It usually affects your nose, throat, and sinuses.
Symptoms typically include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, and sometimes mild headache or body aches. Fever is less common in adults with a head cold, but may occur in children.
Most head colds are caused by rhinoviruses, but other viruses also contribute. The infection spreads through close contact with respiratory droplets from an infected person, such as through coughing or sneezing.
Treatment focuses on managing symptoms. Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications like pain relievers and decongestants can provide relief. Antibiotics, such as amoxicillin, are ineffective because they target bacteria, not viruses.
A head cold usually clears up within 7 to 10 days. However, if your symptoms worsen or persist beyond this timeframe, consult a doctor.
