Understanding Quinapril’s Mechanism and Indications

Quinapril is an ACE inhibitor. It works by blocking the action of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), an enzyme that converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor, raising blood pressure. By inhibiting ACE, quinapril reduces angiotensin II levels, leading to vasodilation and decreased blood pressure.

Primary Indications

Doctors prescribe quinapril primarily to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. Additionally, quinapril is used to treat heart failure, improving symptoms and slowing disease progression. In some cases, it may be prescribed following a myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Secondary Indications and Considerations

Its use in diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease related to diabetes) is also established to slow disease progression. However, careful monitoring of kidney function is vital during treatment. Patients should be aware of potential side effects, including a persistent dry cough, dizziness, and changes in potassium levels.
