Prepare the injection site. Cleanse a 2-inch area with an antiseptic wipe, working outwards from the center. Allow the area to air dry completely.
Preparing the Injection
Ensure the Toradol vial is properly reconstituted according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Draw up 1 mL of the reconstituted solution into a sterile syringe with a 22-25 gauge needle. Inspect for particulate matter or discoloration before administration.
Administering the Injection
Select an appropriate intramuscular injection site, such as the ventrogluteal or deltoid muscle. Locate the injection site by palpation and then firmly pinch the skin and underlying muscle tissue between your thumb and fingers. Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle, penetrating through the skin and subcutaneous tissue into the muscle. Aspirate before injecting to check for blood return; if blood appears, withdraw and select a different location.
Slowly inject the 1 mL of Toradol over 10-15 seconds. Remove the needle at the same angle it was inserted and apply gentle pressure to the injection site with a sterile gauze pad.
Post-Injection Care
Dispose of the used syringe and needle properly in a designated sharps container. Monitor the patient for any adverse reactions, such as pain, swelling, or bleeding at the injection site. Advise the patient to report any unusual symptoms immediately. Document the administration, including the time, location, and any patient reactions.
