Patient Counseling and Important Information

Take doxycycline exactly as prescribed. Finish the entire course, even if you feel better sooner. Skipping doses weakens its effectiveness against infection.

Drink plenty of water while taking doxycycline. This helps prevent stomach upset and facilitates absorption.

Avoid sun exposure during treatment and use sunscreen with a high SPF. Doxycycline can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, leading to sunburn.

Report any unusual symptoms like severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, or allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling) immediately to your doctor. These could be signs of serious side effects.

This medication can interact with certain medications, including birth control pills. Discuss all current medications and supplements with your doctor or pharmacist before starting doxycycline.

Doxycycline may stain your teeth. Good oral hygiene is important to minimize this risk. Children under 8 should generally avoid this medication due to this risk.

Store doxycycline in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. Don’t double up doses.

Contact your doctor if you experience persistent nausea, vomiting, or any other concerning side effects.
