Drug Interactions with Azithromycin

Azithromycin can interact with several medications. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist of all medications, vitamins, and supplements you take, including herbal remedies. This helps prevent potentially harmful interactions.

Digoxin: Azithromycin can increase digoxin levels. Your doctor may need to monitor your digoxin levels more closely if you’re taking both.

Ergot alkaloids (e. g., ergotamine, dihydroergotamine): Combining these with azithromycin may increase the risk of ergotism, characterized by peripheral vasoconstriction. Avoid this combination.

Anticoagulants (e. g., warfarin): Azithromycin may increase the effects of anticoagulants, potentially increasing bleeding risk. Close monitoring of your INR (International Normalized Ratio) is recommended.

Drugs metabolized by CYP3A4: Azithromycin can inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme, affecting the metabolism of many drugs. This can lead to increased levels of drugs metabolized by this enzyme, like some statins and antihistamines. Your doctor might adjust dosages or choose alternative medications.

Antacids: Taking antacids concurrently can reduce the absorption of azithromycin. Separate the administration by at least 2 hours.
