Calculating the Correct Dosage

Always refer to your institution’s approved medication protocols and your physician’s orders. Never administer Metoclopramide (Reglan) without a valid prescription and clear instructions.

Reglan IV dosages vary depending on the patient’s weight, age, and the specific indication. Typical adult doses range from 5 to 20 mg every 6 to 8 hours, not to exceed 40 mg daily. Pediatric dosages are significantly lower and must be carefully calculated based on weight and physician guidelines.

For weight-based calculations, the physician often specifies a dosage in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). For example, a prescription might read “1 mg/kg every 6 hours.” To calculate the dose: Multiply the patient’s weight in kilograms by the prescribed mg/kg. The result is the dose in milligrams to be administered.

Precisely measure the medication using a calibrated syringe. Double-check the dose before administration to avoid errors. Administer the medication slowly over at least 2-3 minutes to minimize the risk of adverse events. Carefully monitor the patient for any side effects, such as drowsiness, restlessness, or extrapyramidal symptoms.

Always record the administered dose and time accurately in the patient’s medical record. Consult a pharmacist or other qualified healthcare professional if you have any questions or uncertainties regarding dosage calculations or administration.
