Administering Proventil Inhaler to Children: A Step-by-Step Guide

First, ensure the child is sitting upright. Help them hold the inhaler correctly, with the mouthpiece facing their mouth.

Using a Spacer

Attach a spacer if prescribed. This makes medication delivery easier and more effective for young children. Inhale slowly and deeply through the spacer while pressing down on the inhaler.

Without a Spacer

If not using a spacer, have the child exhale completely. Then, place the mouthpiece in their mouth, closing their lips tightly around it. Press down on the inhaler and inhale slowly and deeply. Hold their breath for 10 seconds, then exhale slowly.

Repeat the dose as directed by the doctor. If using a spacer, usually one puff is enough. Without a spacer, the dose may require 2 puffs, depending on the prescription. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.

Cleaning the Inhaler

After each use, wipe the mouthpiece with a clean, dry cloth. This prevents buildup and maintains hygiene.

Important Note:

Always consult your child’s doctor or pharmacist for precise instructions on dosage and administration. Never administer medication without their guidance.

When to Contact a Doctor

Contact your pediatrician immediately if your child experiences any adverse reactions, such as increased wheezing, rapid heart rate, or difficulty breathing.
